The appointment of John Smith to the Reporting Panel and Utilities Panel of the Competition Commission (CC) was announced by Consumer Minister Gerry Sutcliffe on 25 May. In the DTi press release, the Minister welcomed the appointment of a total of 24 new members to the CC, half of whom would also serve on the Utilities Panel. Commenting on the appointments, Paul Geroski, Chairman of the Commission, said: ‘These very distinguished people bring to the CC a wealth of experience and relevant skills’.
Members of the CC are appointed by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry for an eight-year term following an open competition.
